FLEX is an interdisciplinary institute at HTWK Leipzig, comprising around 20 staff members, which is active in the field of applied construction research. Since 2014, architects, civil and industrial engineers, as well as timber technicians and computer scientists, have been working together under its umbrella to develop new solutions at the interface between academically oriented, predominantly digital planning processes and craft-based construction processes. The aim is to develop system-innovative solutions that respect the process-oriented nature of construction and harness the potential of digitally supported prefabrication processes for construction projects, which must necessarily be individually tailored. The research focuses on the digital design, planning, prefabrication and construction of timber, wood-based materials and natural building materials.
